- Theprincipleoflanguageusageisdeterminedbythesocialinteractionofthepeopleinacommunity.Thustheuseoflanguagebythespeakersmightconveythedegreeofpowerandsolidaritythatliebetweenthem.Thesesocialrealitiesareconveyedbythespeakersuseofsocialdeixistheencodingofsocialdistinctionsthatarerelativetotheparticipant-rolesparticularlyaspectsofthesocialrelationshipholdingbetweenspeakerandtheaddressee(s)orspeakerandsomereferents.Oneofthekindsofsocialdeixiswhichisusedbyspeakersisformofaddress.Thewaythespeakersaddresstheaddresseescandescribethesocialrelationshipbetweenthem.ThisresearchtriestoobservetheuseofformsofaddressbythecharactersinthePhantomoftheOperanovel.Bydoingthisresearchtheresearchertriestoelaboratehowtheformsofaddresswhichareusedbythecharactersexplainthedimensionofpowerandsolidaritywhichwerecreatedbytheauthorofthenovel.ThisresearchisanalyzrdbasedonformsofaddressflowchartwhichwasdevelopedbyErvinTrippin1971.TheresearchoftheuseofformsofaddressinPhantomoftheOperashowsthat1)TitleLastNameisusedtomarktheprofessionalpositionofthecharactersinthenovel2)MonsieurLastNameisasexbasedformsofaddressthatisusedtomarkthedistancedegreeofformalityandthenotionofnon-familiaritybetweencharacters3)MadameLastNameisusedastheformsofaddresstosetformalitysettingtowomanemployeesintheoperahouseandformofaddresswhichisdedicatedtoarespectedaddressee4)MademoiselleLastNameisusedtosetaformalitysettinganddistancebetweenthespeakerandtheaddressee5)KinshipLastNameisusedtoaddresssomeonewhoisconsideredasafamilymember6)FirstNameisusedtoreferaninferiorstrengthenthedegreeofintimacybetweenthespeakerandtheaddresseeandaddresssomeonewhoseidentityisrevealed7)MultipleNamesorthetermsofendearmentsareusedtoshowthespeakerssexualintimacytowardtheaddressee..
