  • iABSTRACTKusumawatiNuningtyas.2015.CulturalInformationinTheEnglishTextbookWhenEnglishRingstheBellforTheSeventhGradersofSMP/MTs.ThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDr.EnnyIrawatiM.Pd.Keywordsculturalinformationenglishtextbookculturecurriculum.EnglishisoneofinternationallanguageswhichisveryimportantforeducationinIndonesiabecausemanyreferencesorsourcesarewritteninEnglishforexamplejournalsandtextbooks.Englishtextbooksbecomethelearningsourveforlearnerswhichincludesculturalinformationwhichreflectswiththebackgroundoftheauthor.Thisresearchisadescriptivecontentanalysistoanswer1)toknowwhetherEnglishtextbookWhenEnglishRingstheBellfortheseventhgradersofSMP/MTscoverculturalinformationand2)howculturalinformationiscoveredonEnglishtextbookWhenEnglishRingstheBellfortheseventhgradersofSMP/MTswhichusequestionsrubricaboutthecontentofthetextbookwhichwasrelatedtoculturalinformation.TheinstrumentisadaptedfromKilickayasarticlewhichwasentitledGuidelinestoEvaluateCulturalContentinTextbooks.Thedataiscollectedthroughdocumentanalysis.ThisresearchshowsthatEnglishtextbookWhenEnglishRingstheBellfortheseventhgradersofSMP/MTscoversnativeculturemorethanforeignculturewhichareshownfromthepicturesandthedialoguesinthetextbooksbecausethelearnersarestillonlearningprocessofearlylevelsoitisexpectedthatthelearnersknownativeculturecloserbeforelearningforeignculture.Thematerialswhichareexplainedontextbookscoverthingsaroundthelearnerssothelearnersfeelfamiliarwiththetopicsgiven.Thetopicswhicharegivendonotcontainbadorgoodcommentbecauseitcouldmakebias.Itisfoundthat1)EnglishtextbookWhenEnglishRingstheBellfortheseventhgradersofSMP/MTscoverstheculturalinformationand2)thewaystheEnglishtextbookWhenEnglishRingstheBellpresentstheculturalinformationfortheseventhgradersofSMP/MTscoversarebythecontentofthetextbookfromtheactivitiesonthebookforexamplethepictureswhichareshownandtheexercisessuchascrosswordandprojects.Itissuggestedthattheteacherisexpectedtobeawareofculturalinformationinthetextbook.Theteacherisalsoexpectedtodiscoverandcomplementtheforeignculturalinformationforthelearners.Thedeveloperoftheiitextbookisexpectedtobediscreetonincludingthematerialswhicharerelatedtoforeignculture.Futureresearchersareexpectedtoconductotherstudiesonculturalinformationmoredeeplyintopicswhicharerelatedtothisstudybecausethereareplentyoftextbookswhicharenotresearchedyet.
