- ThesisDepartmentofEnglishFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.AdvisorDr.JohannesA.PrayogoM.Pd.M.Ed.KeyWordswritingcartoonanimationclipspictureseriesWritingisasimportantasspeakingforcommunicatingwithothers.Itisdonebyexpressingideasmessagesorinformationthroughwrittenform.HoweverbasedontheresultsofthePreliminaryStudyintheeleventhgradersofSMAN7Malangtheyhadsomeproblemsinwritingactivity.Theresultsshowthattheirwritingabilitystayedonfairlevel.ThiswasduetothemonotonouswayoftheteachingandlearningprocessandtheirlowmotivationinEnglishclassespeciallyinwritingactivity.Employingcartoonanimationclipsandpictureserieswaschosentoovercomethestudentsproblemsinwritingactivity.ThisstudyadaptedtheClassroomActionResearch(CAR)byKemmisandTaggart.Thisresearchconductedintwocyclesandsevenmeetings3meetingsinCycle1and4meetingsinCycle2.ThesubjectofthisresearchwasthestudentsofXIIS4ofSMAN7Malangacademicyear2010/2011.Thefocusofthisresearchwasaboutthestudentswritingperformancestudentsattitudeduringtheemploymentofcartoonanimationclipsandpictureseriesandstudentsresponsetowardtheemploymentofthecartoonanimationclipsandpictureseries.Theinstrumentsofthisresearchwerewritingscoringrubricfieldnotesobservationchecklistsinterviewguideandquestionnaires.Thedatatakenwasanalyzedbyusingqualitativemethodsinterpretedbasedonthecriteriaofsuccessandpresenteddescriptively.Theresultsofthisresearchshowedthattheemploymentofcartoonanimationclipsandpictureseriesinwritingactivityreachedthecriteriaofsuccess.ThemeanscoreofwritingincreasedfromCycle1toCycle2.Basedontheclassmeanofwritingscoresthelevelofthestudentswritingabilitychangedfromfairleveltoverygoodlevel.Themediausedinthisresearchwasthecartoonanimationclipandpictureseriesthatcontainednarrativestories.BasedontheresultsofthisstudyitwasconcludedthattheemploymentofcartoonanimationclipsandpictureseriesinwritingactivitycouldimprovethestudentswritingabilityintermofContentandOrganization.Thestudentsalsoshowedtheirpositiveattitudestowardtheemploymentofthecartoonanimationclipsandpictureseriesinwritingactivity.InadditiontheemploymentofthecartoonanimationclipsandpictureseriesinwritingactivityalsogotgoodresponsesfromthestudentsandtheEnglishclassteacher.ItissuggestedthattheEnglishteachersemploycartoonanimationclipsandpictureseriestoimprovethestudentswritingability.TheschoolprincipalissuggestedtoimprovetheEnglishteachingandlearningprocessandtoimprovethefacilitiesoftheschoolinorderthatthisstrategycouldbewellapplied.InadditionfurtherresearchersaresuggestedtoemploythecartoonanimationclipsandpictureseriesindifferentgradesorlevelofeducationandindifferentEnglishtexttypestoseewhetherthisstrategycanbeemployedmoreeffectively.
