  • Manystudentsfindsomeproblemsinreading.Amajorproblemfacedbythestudentsinreadingtextsisthattheyoftendonotcomprehendtheoverallideasofthetexteventhoughtheyfeelthatthevocabularyandsentencestructurehavenotbeenmajorobstaclestounderstanding.Content-BasedSummarizingTechniquehasbeenproventobeeffectiveinimprovingcollegestudentsabilityinsummarizingreadingpassage.Basedonthepreviousstudyofthistechniquethistechniquethatisclaimedtobeapplicableforstudentsoflowerleveloflinguisticknowledgethancollegestudentscanbeausefultechniquetobeappliedtohelpstudentscomprehendingtext.ThisstudywasdirectedtoexaminetheeffectofTheContent-BasedSummarizingTechniqueonreadingcomprehensionofnarrativetextsofthetwelfthgradersofSMANegeri1ProbolinggointermsofthesignificantdifferenceinunderstandingthemainideasbetweenstudentswhoaretaughtusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechniqueandthosewhoaretaughtwithoutusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechnique.Aquasiexperimentalstudywithnonrandomizedcontrolgrouppretest-posttestdesignwasconductedtoanswerwhetherthereisasignificantdifferenceonthestudentsabilityincomprehendingtextsbetweenthestudentswhoweretaughtbyusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechniquethanthosewhoweretaughtwithoutusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechnique.ThepopulationandsamplesofthisstudyweretwelfthgradersofXII-IA2andXII-IA3inSMANegeri1Probolinggo.Thisstudywasconductedinthreestagespre-experimentalstageexperimentalstageandpost-experimentalstagewheretheresearcherdidsomepreparationinpre-experimentalstageconductedthreeactivitiesintheexperimentalstagepre-testingboththeexperimentalandthecontrolgroupsapplyingtheContent-BasedSummarizingTechniquefortheexperimentalgroupandpost-testingboththeexperimentalandthecontrolgroupsandalsorecordedandanalyzedthescoresobtainedfromposttestactivityinthepost-experimentalstage.Thedataobtainedfromthetestadministeredwereintheformofscoresderivedfromthenumberofpropositionofgivenpassages.ThestatisticalanalysisusedinthisstudywastheAnalysisofCovarianceforthestudentsscores.TheresultshowedthattherewassignificantdifferenceinreadingcomprehensionofnarrativetextsintermsofunderstandingthemainideasbetweenthetwelfthgradersofSMANegeri1ProbolinggowhoweretaughtusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechniqueandthosewhoweretaughtwithoutusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechnique.ThestudentswhoweretaughtbyusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechniqueachievedbetterscoresthanthosewhoweretaughtwithoutusingContent-BasedSummarizingTechnique.ItmeansthatContent-BasedSummarizingTechniqueiseffectivetocomprehendnarrativetextsintermsofunderstandingthemainideas.BasedonthefindingsitissuggestedthatSeniorHighSchoolteachersuseContent-BasedSummarizingTechniqueinteachingreadingtohelpstudentscomprehendreadingtextsandalsotohelpstudentsincreasetheirvocabulary.Besidesthepracticalsuggestionsforfurtherstudyaresuggested.Firstitissuggestedthatforfurtherstudiesitcanbeconductedbyusingothertypesoftextlikedescriptiveandargumentative.SecondtheimplementationofContent-BasedSummarizingTechniquecanbecombinedwithpeercorrectioninordertostimulatestudentsparticipationintheprocessofteachingandlearning.
