  • ivSUMMARYPrayogoEmakarizaJannahDewi.2018.TheEffectofExplicitandImplicitCorrectiveFeedbackontheEleventhGradeStudentsConditionalSentences.SarjanasThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersUniversitasNegeriMalang.Advisors(I)Dr.SinthaTresnadewiM.Pd.(II)NurHayatiS.Pd.M.Ed.KeyWordsgrammarexplicitcorrectivefeedbackimplicitcorrectivefeedbackconditionalsentencesGrammarisanimportantpartofEnglish.Unfortunatelyteacherssometimesforgetthatstudentsneedtonotonlylearnitbutalsopracticeitsothestudentscouldunderstandgrammarconceptsmoreeasily.Inthiscasestudentsoftenmakesomemistakesinpracticingtheirgrammar.Correctivefeedbackhelpsthemcorrecttheirmistakes.Therearetwokindsofcorrectivefeedbackexplicitcorrectivefeedbackandimplicitcorrectivefeedback.Inexplicitcorrectivefeedbackbesidesshowingthestudentsmistakestheteacheralsogivescorrectionofstudentsmistakeswhileintheimplicitcorrectivefeedbacktheteacheronlyshowsthestudentsmistakes.Thisstudyisaimedatinvestigatingthedifferencebetweentheeffectsofexplicitandimplicitcorrectivefeedbackontheeleventhgradersconditionalsentences.Thisstudyusedaquasi-experimentaldesign.Thedataweretakenfrom26studentsofLintasMinatClassinSMANegeri1Kepanjen.Theclasswaschosenbytheschool.TheresearcherchosethisschoolsinceSMANegeri1KepanjenisthebestseniorhighschoolinKabupatenMalang.Thestudentsweregroupedintotwogroupsthatweregivendifferenttreatments.Onegroupwasgivenexplicitcorrectivefeedbackwhiletheothergroupwasgivenimplicitcorrectivefeedbackasthetreatment.Pretesttreatmentandposttestweregiventothetwogroups.Thedatacollectedinthisstudywereintheformofstudentsgrammarscores.Theresultsoftheposttestofthetwogroupswerecomparedusingstatisticsinordertodrawtheconclusion.BasedonthedataanalysisusingMann-WhitneyUitwasfoundthatexplicitcorrectivefeedbackgavemoresignificanteffectthanthatfromimplicitcorrectivefeedbackonstudentsconditionalsentences.Theresultsshowedthatthemeanscoreresultingfromexplicitcorrectivefeedbackwashigherthanthatfromimplicitcorrectivefeedback.Itwas65.3846comparedto44.2308.ThehypothesistestingbyusingMann-WhitneyUwasdoneandthecalculatedvalueincolumnAsymp.Sig.(2-tailed)was.029.Itislowerthan.05whichmeansthestudentsscoreswhentheyweregivenexplicitcorrectivefeedbacksignificantlyhigherthanwhentheyweregivenimplicitcorrectivefeedback.Itcanbeconcludedthatthestudentswhoweregivenexplicitcorrectivefeedbackachievedbetteringrammar.Basedontheresultofthestudyitissuggestedthatfutureresearchersinvolvemorerespondentsmakethedurationofthestudyabitlongerandgivemoretreatments.Thelastisitisbetterforthefutureresearcherstousemorescopesofthematerialnotonlyone.FortheEnglishteacherstheyareexpectedtobeabletochoosethemostappropriatemethodingivingcorrectivefeedbacktostudentstaskparticularlyingrammar.
