  • iiiABSTRACTFadlynDewiEriana.2017.UsingJazzChantstoImproveTheEighthGradersGrammarMasteryofSMPN6MalangsStudents.Thesis.EnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersUniversitasNegeriMalang.Advisors(I)Dr.FuraidahM.A.(II)Dr.SinthaTresnadewiM.Pd.KeywordsJuniorHighSchoolStudentGrammarmasteryJazzChantThisresearchsgoalistoimprovegrammarmasteryofthestudentsin8-8classofSMPN6Malangespeciallyonsimplepresenttense.Jazzchantwaschosenbecauseofitsstrengthsasoneofmusicaltechniqueswhichcouldhelpthestudentstoimprovetheirpronunciationvocabularyandgrammar/structureability(Graham2006).Jazzchantscouldalsohelptolightenupthemoodinclasssothatthelearningprocessofgrammarinthisstudywouldbemoreenjoyableforthestudents(Afif2015).Therepetitionactivitiesinjazzchantingalsoplaysanimportantroleinimprovingstudentsspeakingskillandtheirawarenessoftheusageofthecertaingrammar.Thedesignofthisresearchisclassroomactionresearchwhichconsistsoffourstagesplanningimplementingobservingandreflecting.Theinstrumentsusedforgatheringthedataweregrammartestobservationsheetstudentsquestionnaireandinterviewguide.Thesubjectsofthisresearchwerethe8-8studentsofSMPN6Malangwhomduringtheinternshiptheresearcherfoundoutthatthemostofthestudentshadprobleminusingagoodstructureandtherightuseoftensetowriteasentence.Notonlydidtheyhavesomedifficultiesinexpressingwhattheywantedtobecauseofthelackofvocabularythestudentswerealsomistakenthewordclass.Basedonthepre-testconductedbeforeitwasdiscoveredthatonlythreestudentscouldpasstheminimumscoredeterminedbytheresearcher.Thisstudywasconductedintwocycleswhichconsistedoftwomeetingsineachcycle.Thefindingsofthisstudyshowthatthestudentsgrammarmasteryespeciallyonsimplepresenttensewasimproved.Theimprovementwasindicatedbythenumberofstudentswhocouldpasstheminimumpassingscorewhichwas75.Aftertheimplementationofjazzchantsinthefirstcycletherewereonly8studentswhocouldpassthetestwhichmadeitimpossibletodeclarethisresearchasasuccesssinceoneofthecriteriaofsuccesswhichwasatleast70percentofthestudentspassedthetestwasnotachievedyet.Theresearcherthencontinuedtothesecondcyclethatresultedingreatimprovementinthestudentsscoreafterthepost-testsince75%ofthestudentspassedthetestwiththescoreof75andabove.Inadditionthestudentsmotivationinlearningwasveryhighaftertheimplementation.Basedonthequestionnairemorethan70%ofthestudentsstatedthattheyenjoyedthelearningprocessandtheylearnedfasterbecauseofjazzchant.ivAsaconclusionjazzchantisverybeneficialtobeimplementedinclasssinceitcanimprovestudentsgrammarmasteryespeciallyinsimplepresenttense.Therepetitionpracticeinjazzchantwithsomelittlechangesonthesubjectandtheverbdidhelpthestudentstomemorizeandgetusedtotheuseofthepatternfaster.Inadditionjazzchantcanalsoimprovestudentsmotivationinlearningsinceitbecomesanewwayoflearningforthem.Italsohelpsthestudentsenjoythelessonwithgrammarwhichusuallyisconsideredboringforthestudents.Learningusingjazzchantthestudentsdothesameactivitiestogether.Ithelpstheteachertobuildabridgewiththestudentswhichcanlowertheinhibitionduringthelearning.Thiswaythestudentscanenjoythelearningprocess.TherearesomesuggestionsfortheEnglishteachersandfurtherresearchers.FirstforEnglishteachersjazzchantcanbeimplementedintheclassroominordertoimprovethestudentsgrammarmastery.Itissuggestedthatjazzchantisonlytobeusedascomplimentaryactivityortheclassroomlaterwillbetooteachercentered.WhattheEnglishteachershavetopayattentiontoisthatjazzchantrequiresrehearsalbeforeitisimplementedintheclassroomtomakesuretheimplementationrunssmoothly.Fullcooperationofthestudentsisalsoanimportantfactorbehindthegreatresultinusingjazzchant.Furtherresearcherarerecommendedtousejazzchantondifferentgradeandlevelofeducationalsotoimprovedifferentskilllikewhattheresearcherhavestatedbeforesuchasvocabularypronunciationandintonationandalsolisteningandspeaking.
