- ivABSTRACTDestatamaRizkhy.2017.TheCorrelationbetweenWatchingEnglishMoviesHabitandTheListeningAchievementofTheFreshmenStudentAttheStateUniversityofMalang.UndergraduateThesisEnglishDepartmentFacultyofLettersStateUniversityofMalang.Advisor(I)Dr.JohannesA.PrayogoM.Pd.M.Ed(II)Prof.Moh.AdnanLatiefMaPh.DKeyWordswatchingEnglishmoviesmovielisteningskillfreshmenstudentshabitLearninganewlanguageisadifficultprocessandtheneedforaneffectivewaytolearnthislanguagekeepsincreasing.AmongmanyskillsinlearningEnglishlisteningisoneofthemostusedonesbecauselisteningisoneofthetworeceptiveskillsotherthanreading.Howeverstudentshavedifficultiesinlearningthelisteningskill.Withthatconditionitisnecessarytoinvestigatethewaystudentslearnthisskill.WatchinganEnglishmovieisoneoftheactivitiesthatprovideagreatdealofanEnglishexposuretothelearnerthusinvestigatingthecorrelationofstudentshabitofwatchingEnglishmoviesandtheirlisteningachievementisnecessary.ThisstudyaimedatdescribingwhetherornotthereisacorrelationbetweenstudentshabitofwatchingEnglishmovieandtheirachievementinlisteningclass.Thisstudyusedcorrelationalresearchdesign.Itisaquantitativeresearchdesign.ThispresentstudywasconductedintheUniversitasNegeriMalang.Thesamplingtechniqueofthepresentstudyisarandomsampling.Thetotalsampleofthisresearchis85freshmenstudentswhichismorethanhalfofthepopulation.Thedatawerecollectedusingtwoinstrumentsquestionnaireandthescoresheetfromthelecturers.Thequestionnairehasbeenalreadytriedoutandvaliditytestedtomakesuretheinstrumentsweregood.Thequestionnairewasusedtocollectthestudentshabitdegreewhereasthescoresheetwasusedtogetthestudentslisteningachievement.TheresultofthispresentstudyshowsthatthereisapositivecorrelationbetweenwatchingEnglishmoviehabitandthelisteningachievementoffreshmenstudent.Thecalculatedvalueofcorrelationcoefficientis0.614whichcanbeinterpretedinstrongpositivecorrelation.TheresultofthisstudyprovidesabetterinsightforstudentsteachersandlecturersinIndonesiaandatheoreticalframeworkforafutureresearcher.Furthermoreforfutureresearchersmayconductastudyonthistopicwithanimprovedversionofthequestionnaireandbroaderpopulationandalargersample.
