ABSTRACTDianaRiaWahyu.2017.UsingJigsawTechniquetoImprovetheReadingSkilloftheEighthGradersofSMP16Malang.UndergraduateThesisDepartmentofEnglishFacultyofLettersUniversitasNegeriMalang.Advisors(I)NunungSuryatiM.Ed.Ph.D.(II)Dr.UtariPrabaAstutiM.A.KeywordsjigsawtechniquereadingskillnarrativetextTheaimofthisresearchwastoimprovestudentsabilityinreadingskillusingJigsawtechnique.JigsawtechniqueisacooperativelearningtechniquethatenablesthestudentstoworktogetheronasmallpartofaproblemwhichisconsistingoftwogroupsthatisJigsawGroupandExpertGroup.TheprocedureofthetechniqueinthisstudyarefirstthestudentsaredividedinagroupwhichcalledJigsawgroup.Secondstudentfromeachgroupvoluntereedtobecomeagroupleader.Thirdstudentsgivendifferenttextwithsomevocabularylistofsomeunfamiliarwordsinthetext.Fourthstudentsreadtheirowntext.FifthstudentsjoinotherstudentswiththesametextandthisgroupcalledExpertgroup.SixthstudentsareregroupedwiththeirpreviousgrouporJigsawgroup.SeventhstudentspresenttheirresultintheirJigsawgroup.Thelaststudentsdoatestbasedonthematerialgiven.Thetechniqueallowedstudentstoworkcooperativelyinateaminordertogetfullinformationofthetext.ThedesignofthisstudyisClassroomActionResearch.Thestepsofthisresearchwereplanningconductingactionobservationandreflection.ThesubjectsofthisstudywerethestudentsofSMPN16Malanginthesecondsemesterofacademicyear2016/2017.Thereare32studentsinthatclass.Thestudytooktwocyclestoachievethecriteriaofsuccessthatis70%ofthestudentsreachtheminimumscore75.TheresultoftheresearchshowthatusingJigsawtechniquecanimprovethestudentsreadingskill.Itwasshownbystudentsreadingtestscorewhichpassedtheminimumstandardthatis75attheendofmeetingand90.6%ofthestudentsreachtheminimumscore.IntheaplicationofJigsawtechniquetheyweremoreactiveineveryactivitytheywerewillingtoparticipateinthegroupdiscussionandtheyweremoreserioustofinishthetaskingroups.TheywerealsomotivatedtoworkingroupsandtheyweremotivatedinreadingtheEnglishtask.BasedontheresearchresulttheconclusionofusingJigsawtechniquearefirstcanimprovestudentsreadingskillandalsostudentsdidnothaveanydifficultiestofindnewvocabularysinceresearcherlistedthedifficultwordsbellowthestudentsworksheet.EnglishteacherhopefullyadoptthestepsofJigsawtechniquetoimprovestudentsinreadingskill.Teachersarealsosuggestedtousethistechniquetoenhancestudentsmotivationinreadingwithsomemodificationtoaccommodatetheweaknessofthistechniqueintermsoftimeallotment.TheresearcheralsosuggestedthatfurtherresearchersexploretheuseoftheJigsawtechniqueondifferentkindsnarrativetext.ABSTRAKDianaRiaWahyu.2017.UsingJigsawTechniquetoImprovetheReadingSkilloftheEighthGradersofSMP16Malang.UndergraduateThesisDepartmentofEnglishFacultyofLettersUniversitasNegeriMalang.Advisors(I)NunungSuryatiM.Ed.Ph.D.(II)Dr.UtariPrabaAstutiM.A.KataKunciteknikjigsawkemampuanmembacateksnaratifTujuanpenelitianiniadalahuntukmeningkatkankemampuanpemahamanmembacasiswamenggunakanteknikJigsaw.TeknikJigsawadalahteknikpembelajarankerjasamayangmembuatsiswa-siswabekerjabersama-samauntukmenyelesaikansuatupermasalahanyangterdiridari2kelompokyaitukelompokjigsawdankelompokahli.Langkah-langkahdalammelaksanakanteknikiniadalahpertamasiswadibagikedalamsebuahkelompokyangdisebutJigsawGrup.Keduasiswasecarasukarelamenjadiketuakelompok.Ketigasiswadiberiteksyangberbedadengandaftarkatasulitdibawahteks.Keempatsiswadiberiwaktuuntukmembacateksmasing-masing.Kelimasiswadimintabergabungdengansiswalainyangmemilikiteksyangsamakelompokinidisebutkelompokahli.Keenamsiswakembalikekelompokyangsebelumnya1ataukelompokJigsaw.Ketujuhsiswaharusmenjelaskanisimasing-masingteksmereka.Terakhirsiswamengerjakansoalyangdiberikangurusesuaidenganteksyangmerekapelajari.Teknikinimemfasilitasisiswauntukbekerjasecarakooperatifdidalamkelompokdengantujuanuntukmendapatkaninformasilengkapdaribacaan.Penelitianinimenggunakandesainpenelitiantindakankelasdenganmengikutiempatlangkahpenelitianyaituperencanaanpenerapanobservasidanrefleksi.SubyekdaripenelitianadalahkelasVIII-ISMPN16Malangpadasemestergenaptahunakademik2016/2017.Ada32siswayangditelitidalamkelastersebut.Penelitianinimengambil2siklusuntukmencapaitargetyangmana70%siswamampumencapainilaiminimum75.TemuandaripenelitianinimenunjukkanbahwateknikJigsawmeningkatkankemampuanpemahamanmembacasiswa.Halituterbuktidarinilaisiswayangtelahmencapaistandarminimalkelulusanyakni75padapertemuanterakhirdan90.6%siswadikelastersebutmampumencapainilailebihdari75.DalampengaplikasianteknikJigsawsiswalebihaktifdalamsetiapaktivitasmerekabersediauntukberpartisipasidalamdiskusikelompokdanmerekajugalebihseriusuntukmenyelesaikantugasdidalamkelompok.SiswajugatermotivasiuntukbekerjadalamkelompokdanmerekatermotivasimembacatugasBahasaInggris.BerdasarkandaripenemuaninikesimpulandaripenggunaanteknikJigsawadalahdapatmeningkatkankemampuanmembacasiswadanjugamerekatidakmempunyaikesulitanlagiuntukmenemukankosakatabaru.GuruBahasaInggrisdiharapkanmengadopsilangkah-langkahdalamteknikJigsawuntukmeningkatkankemampuansiswadalampemahamanmembaca.Paragurujugadisarankanuntukmenggunakanstrategiinidalamupayameningkatkanmotivasisiswadalammembacadenganbeberapamodifikasiterutamauntukmengakomodasikekurangandaristrategiinidalamhalalokasiwaktu.PenelitijugamenyarankanuntukpenelitiselanjutnyamengeksplorekembalipenggunaanteknikJigsawdalamnaratifteksyangberbeda
