  • Thisstudyisintendedtousethejigsawtechniquetoincreasethemotivationoftheeleventhgradersinreadingnarrativetexts.Thenarrativetextischosenbecausetheproblemoccurswhentheclasswasdiscussingit.Inajigsawreadingactivitythestudentsaredividedintojigsawgroups.Thestudentsthenformexpertgroupssothatatleastonememberofeachjigsawgroupisineachexpertgroup.Eachgroupthenreadsonepieceofwrittenstoryandbecomestheexpertofthatpartofthestory.Afterthattheyreturntotheirjigsawgrouptosharetheirpartwiththeothermembersofthegroup.Eachstudentthenwasgivenanindividualquiztochecktheircomprehensiononthecompleteversionofthestory.ThestudyisdesignedasaclassroomactionresearchfollowingKemmisandMcTaggartsmodel.Thestudyisconductedintwocycleseachofwhichconsistsoffourstepsnamelyplanningimplementationobservationandreflection.ThesubjectsaretheeleventhgradersofIlmuAlam2ofSMAN12Malang.Theinstrumentsusedtocollectthedataareobservationsheetfortheresearcherobservationchecklistquizstudentsresponsejournalstudentsquestionnairesinformalinterviewandfieldnotes.Theresultsofthisstudyshowthatthejigsawtechniqueincreasesthestudentsmotivationincomprehendingnarrativetext.Firstthroughtheseriesofactivitiesthejigsawtechniqueactivatesthestudentsaswellastheteacherduringtheclassactivitiestakenplace.SecondjigsawprocedureprovidesthestudentswithawidechancetopracticetheirEnglish.Thirditmakestheclassmorelively.Fourthitalsoincreasesthestudentsachievementincomprehendingthenarrativetext.Itisprovenbythestudentsscoresthatareabovetheminimummastery-learningstandard(SKBM).Fifththejigsawactivitiesletthestudentsincreasetheirself-confidenceandself-esteem.Sixththistechniquepromotescooperationandappreciationamongthestudents.ThereareseveralsuggestionsthatoughttobeconsideredbytheteacherswhentheyconducttheteachingandlearningEnglish.Firstitisimportantforteacherstohavevariousteachingtechniquesinordertoavoidstudentsboredomanditisrecommendedthattheteacherincludejigsawasoneoftheteachingtechniquesappliedintheclass.Secondtheteachershoulddesignclassactivitiesthatdonotonlyactivatetheteacherbutalsothestudents.ThirdsimpleEnglishisrequiredtomakeiteasyforthestudentstogetthepointsofteachersexplanation.ItistolerabletouseIndonesiantoletthestudentsdocomprehendtheinstructions.
