  • A survey was conducted by sending 437 questionnaires to institutions, university departments and pharmaceutical industries which presumably have animal laboratories throughout Indonesia, in order to get information on their laboratory animal resources. One hundred eleven out of 145 respondents (76,6%) stated that they used laboratory animals for their activities. Ninety-nine out of the 111 respondents (88,3%) mentioned that laboratory animals were absolutely neccessary for their routine and research work, and 96,4% of the respondents claimed that they had difficulties in procuring their animals. The sources of laboratory animals were commonly derived from conventional breeding stocks. They were bred by their own institutions as self suppliers or by livestock farmers. . Based upon close observation during this survey to several institutions and farmers, it was concluded that their management and method of breeding were not appropriate and uniform. Therefore it is suggested that Indonesia should begin to establish a centralized and/or decentralized laboratory animal facilities in order to solve the present problem of procurement of good quality laboratory animals at reasonable prices.
