- This paper highlights on lokal elite contestation within nagari reconstruction at regional autonomy era in Minangkabau, West Sumatra. This study analyzes how Minangkabau people view, interpret and perceive regional autonomy in which the realization is the forming of nagari again. This study focuses on the strategies created and developed either inside or outside organization of Minangkabau people by conducting accommodation, resistance and involvement of various group interests as well. This study is influenced by Scott (1985), Abu Lughod (1990) and Tsing (1999) theories. This research approach is qualitative using ethnography method (Hammersley and Atkinson, 1983). Data collections involved are observation and deep interview. The research finding shows that nagari reconstruction done to return identity and spirit namely custom and religion of Minangkabau ethnic, however politic interests and local elite power color it as well. The occurring of trade-offs between lokal power and national power (national system). There are friction, negotiation and seldom compromistidy that show accommodation as well as resistance among local elite. It is found that local elite, a group that is not always solid and homogene without friction. Local elite resides between local arena and national arena in the same time.
