- Background. Depression in geriatric population needs good yet inexpensive support systems. They need more accessible, inexpensive, and safe therapy for their depression. Self-indulging Exercise (Latihan Pasrah Diri/LPD) is a method that combines relaxation and praying (dzikr) while focusing on respiratory technique. The target is evoking relaxation response which can reduce depression sign and symptoms. One of depression signand symptoms will increase platelet activity, represented used the increment of mean platelet volume (MPV).Aims. This research aimed to find the effect of Self-indulging exercise (LPD) to the mean platelet volume level in geriatric population with depression.Methods. This research used quasi experimental method. The subjects were 55 geriatric patients with Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) ≥ 11 from Geriatric Health Service (Posyandu Lansia) in Manisrenggo District, Klaten, Central Java. Subjects were divided into two groups consisted treatment and control groups. There were 28 subjects assigned to treatment group, who received twice daily of LPD for 21 consecutive days (3weeks). Meanwhile, the control group did not receive LPD. Mean platelet volume was measured before and after treatment used LPD. The difference between the two groups were calculated using independent t-test.Results. There was a significant difference in mean platelet volume between treatment and control group (p<0.01). Mean platelet volume was reduced significantly after LPD. The result was 0.78±0.48 at treatment group and control group was 0.03±0.23 (p<0.01).Conclusion. Self-indulging exercise (LPD) treatment could significantly reduced mean platelet volume in geriatric patients with depression symptoms.
