- Vihara Avalokitesvara Pamekasan, Madura has a long history. It was build 300 years ago and able to maintain its existence until this day. The things that make this monastery interesting are this monastery is used not only for Buddhist, Taoist, and Confusianist but also used by Moslem and Hindus. Moreoverm, this monastery is a place where Majapahit’s heritage can be found. The meaning of the ornaments inside this monastery can be interesting to be analyzed because of the development of this monastery. To analyzed the meaning of the ornaments, the writer is using iconology method by Panofsky, where this method is a study to get the meaning of artworks through pre-iconographical, iconographical analysis, and iconological interpretation, which all of them are continual steps. Pre-iconographical is done as the first step to find primary meaning. Meanwhile, iconographical analysis is done as further step to find secondary meaning and iconological interpretation is to find intrinsic meaning. Primary meaning from pre-iconigraphical step shows form of the ornaments from Vihara Avalokitesvara. Moreover, iconographical analysis shows the meaning of this monastery ornaments are the philosophy of Chinese culture and Buddhism. Afterward, the meaning of the building is interpreted based on the political, social, and cultural condition in Indonesia from Soekarno’ era until today.
