- Background: Tooth extraction is a process of removing the tooth from the alveolus, which creates wound and socket. The use of plants as medicine for wound healing has been known since long time ago, including betel leaf and papaya leaf. Some studies stated that tannins, saponins, and flavonoids contained in betel leaf and papaya leaf can increase fibroblasts cell number in wound healing. Aim: To compare the effectiveness of green betel leaf and papaya leaf extract gel on fibroblasts cell number after tooth extraction of wistar rats. Method: This research was true experimental laboratory with posttest only control group design. 24 male wistar rats were divided into 6 treatment groups. The mandibular right incisor were extracted using needle holder. Post extraction socket were applied by each gel according to the treatment groups, two times a day. Groups 1, 3, and 5 were euthanized on 4th day, while groups 2, 4, and 6 were euthanized on 8th day, then histology slides were prepared. Fibroblasts cell number was calculated using Olympus software and analyzed statistically. Result: Fibroblasts cell number of all groups increased on the 7th day than the 3rd day (p<0,05) with the highest average fibroblasts cell number belong to the betel leaf extract gel groups. Among the treatment groups, on the 3rd and 7th day, all groups were significantly higher than placebo (p<0,05). However, the post hoc analysis showed the groups of green betel leaf and papaya leaf extract gel were not significantly different (p>0,05). Conclusion: Green betel leaf extract gel can increase fibroblasts cell number higher than papaya leaf extract gel after tooth extraction of wistar rats.
