THE EFFECT OF USING SELECTIVE HIGHLIGHTING STRATEGY ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION IN NARRATIVE TEXT OF THE NINTH GRADE STUDENTS AT JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 14 PEKANBARU

- This research had three formulations of the problem that how students’ reading comprehension in narrative text taught by using selective highlighting strategy is, how students’ reading comprehension in narrative text taught without using selective highlighting strategy is, and whether there is any significant effect of using selective highlighting strategy on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The objective of this research was to find out the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text taught by using selective highlighting strategy, to find out the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text taught without using selective highlighting strategy and to find out whether there is any significant effect of using selective highlighting strategy on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at SMPN 14 Pekanbaru. The population of this research was the all ninth grade that consisted of 261 students. Considering that population was large, the researcher only took two classes as be sample; IX.3 consisted of 30 students as experimental class, and IX.4 consisted 30 students as control class. So, the number of sample from two classes was 60 students. To analyze the data, the researcher adopted Independent sample T-test formula by using SPSS 17. However, the type of this research was Quasiexperiment. After analyzing the data, the researcher found that there was a significant effect of using selective highlighting strategy on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at Junior SMPN 14 where sig. (2-tailed) < α (0.05) as in 0,000 < 0,05. Then, null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) by 2.00<3.750> 2.65.
