- Background: : Thrombocytopenia often accompanies dengue virus infection, chemotherapy, Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura, and side effects from the use of cotrimoxazole. Thrombocytopenia can cause bleeding and death. Date palm fruit extract (Phoenix dactylifera) Ajwa varieties contains vitamin B12, folic acid, and flavonoids which can inhibit the mechanism of folic acid deficiency and also act as an immunostimulators. Objective: To determine the effect of date palm fruit extract (Phoenix dactylifera) Ajwa varieties on increasing the number of thrombocyte cells in white male strain wistar rats induced by cotrimoxazole as a model of thrombocytopenia. Methods: True experimental with post test only control group design. 25 male white rats were divided into 5 groups. Group I was negative control, group II was positive control only induced by cotrimoxazole for 8 days, groups III, IV, and V induced by cotrimoxazole for 8 days and date palm fruit extract at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/KgBB for 2 days from day 16. The thrombocyte cells are counted using Automatic Hematology Analyzer (sysmex XNL-350) in each group. Results and Discussion: The result of one way ANOVA test showed no significant difference (p=0.321) in the positive control group and the treatment group. The absence of significant differences can be caused by the method of making extract that use fresh date palm fruits and ethanol solvents, as well as the factor of how long was the extract were given. Conclusions: Date palm fruit extract (Phoenix dactylifera) Ajwa varieties did not affect on increase the number of thrombocyte cells in white male strain wistar rats induced by cotrimoxazole as a model of thrombocytopenia.
