  • This study focuses on the problems faced by students in learning ESP Speaking at Mechanical Engineering students. The purposes of this study are: (1) to know the problems faced by students in learning ESP Speaking, (2) to know the causes of the problems faced by students in learning ESP Speaking, (3) to know how the students solve their problems in learning ESP Speaking. In this study, the descriptive qualitative research design was used because the researcher wanted to investigate some phenomenon in its natural setting. The subjects of this study were the Mechanical Engineering students who learned ESP Speaking at University of Muhammadiyah Malang. There were two techniques to collect the data. They were observation and interview, with the observation checklist and interview guides as the instruments. The research findings showed that the students faced three problems in learning ESP Speaking: (1) inhibition: the students felt shy to speak up and less confident to speak in English; (2) nothing to say: the students could not produce proper sentences and felt difficult to pronounce English words; (3) mother tongue use: the students often used their local language on speaking class activities. The causes of the students problems in learning ESP Speaking were: (1) the students were afraid to make mistakes in speaking English and was afraid to be criticized by their friends; (2) they have low vocabulary, mastery in grammar and there were certain English phonemes have unique pronunciation; (3) they felt relax and made atmosphere friendlier. Most of the students solved their problems by 1) tried speak English in front of the mirror and choose partner by themselves to practice English, 2) making notes of vocabulary, keep practicing the right pronunciation and spelling by listening music, watching movie, and watching YouTube channel, 3) keep using target language by visiting IRO, BIPA and American Corner in order to meet foreigners to practice their English. The researcher could say that the students faced linguistic and non-linguistic problems in learning ESP Speaking.
