  • Keyword : : Correlation, Achievement, Reading and Writing This research aimed at understanding the correlation between studentsÂ’ reading and writing achievement of English Department. The reading score was taken from the third semester meanwhile the writing score was taken from the fourth semester. Each of those variables is in the Reading III and Writing II courses at English Department, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. This research used correlational design with quantitative approach. A total of 61 students of English Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang were selected as the sample from 300 students as the population. The samples were selected by using cluster sampling technique in which the sample was in a group of individuals who are naturally together in the same class, namely class D, E, and F. The instrument used in this research was document analysis score. The document analysis score was given by the lecturers from the reading and writing score. Furthermore, the researcher correlated the reading score and writing score to understand that there was a correlation between reading and writing achievement. Pearson Product Moment Coefficient was the formula to calculate the data and interpret the result. The findings revealed that the coefficient correlation or r value was 0.476. Additionally, comparing with the rtable on the level of significant 5% was 0.252. In accordance with those values, it can be explained that the rvalue was higher than rtable. If the r value was higher than rtable, it means that Ha (Alternative Hypothesis) was accepted and Ho (Null Hypothesis) was rejected. In other words, there was a correlation between studentsÂ’ reading and writing achievement. In addition, the result of this correlation coefficient was 0.476 which meant that the positive correlation occurred between two variables with the strength of correlation in moderate level because the rvalue resided between 0.400 – 0.600.
