  • The Catalan experience of archiving the Internet: the Padicat (Digital Heritage of Catalonia) repository at the Library of Catalonia. Padicat Coordinator at the Library of Catalonia and Head of the management of the Padicat collections. Since 1996, public administrations in many countries have started projects intended to preserve the contents published on the Internet, with the aim of retaining access to this information created in a digital format. In Spain, the Library of Catalonia created the Padicat (Digital Heritage of Catalonia) repository in 2005. The strategy of digital preservation includes the websites published in Catalan and other languages, under the domain .CAT and other geographic or subject area domains, which are related to Catalonia. After four years of Padicat, the National Library has made public (www.padicat.cat) more than 4,000 digital resources captured on the basis of systematic capture and through agreements with 400 institutions, as well as through the systematic compilation of various events that are key to understanding Catalan society, such as the latest electoral campaigns on the Internet. The benefits of a repository such as Padicat reach all sectors of society: for the citizens it represents open and permanent access to the resources that are the result of the knowledge and expression of the creators from the 21st century. For the institutions, companies, administrations and individuals who produce websites, it offers the preservation of what is produced and guaranteed access to contents and designs that would otherwise disappear, within the conditions set by the laws in each case.
