  • The study examines the history of the growth and the development of Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyan (PERTI) organization in 1928-1971. The organization was founded on May 5'h, 1928 in Candung Bukit Tinggi of West Sumatera on the initiative of Syekh Sulaiman Ar-Rasuly. It represented the fortress of old generation of Minangkabau Moslem who followed ahlussunnah wal jama'ah in their aqidah and Syafiite persuasion in their syari'ah. Thus, it followed the principles of ahlussunnah waljama'ah and Syafiite persuasion. In its history of 1928-1971 the Persatuan Tarbiyah Islamiyah organization experienced a significant development. It developed from its early Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah or educational organization of Islam at PTI level into Islamic social organization with its far-reaching programs. Additionally, to improve the Islamic education, to strengthen and to enhance the proselytizing endeavor of Islam, it was intended to engage in other social activities. Consequently, the abbreviation of PTI was changed into PERTI. In the independent era, the organization was transformed into Islamic political party named PERT/. Subsequently, in 1952 DPT was moved to Jakarta and in 1955 the whole DPP was moved to Jakarta that Bukittinggi served as a branch. In the effort of implementing its working program, PERTI has performed various primary activities in the area of education from play group level to high school level, in the proselytizing and broadcasting area, in the struggle area, and in the political action and movement.
