- The study tried to find out the development of sendratari festival of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta (DIY) since 1980�2000. The sendratari festi¬val of DIY was known as the follow-up of the development of classical dance of Yogyakarta style. The festival was succesfully carried out with the coop¬eration of various classes of society and artists. This study, therefore, tried to reveal the role of society in supporting the event of sendratari festival of DIY in dielecstical discourse. The study used a multi-discipline approach like anthropology, sociol¬ogy, and historical approach. Those approaches were used to find out the implementation of the development of sendratari festival of DIY. The sendratari festival of DIY is a cultural moment which takes impor¬tant part as an interaction means for society. Thus, it has social functions, those are as a means of communication, expression, and idea transmission which are implemented in the creation of sendratari. Therefore, it is impor¬tant to investigate response, attitude, and action of society in the efforts to give meaning to the event of sendratari festival of DIY. Key words: collective ideas, artists' interpretation, and dialectical process.
