  • Mechanical properties of surface layers (laser coatings and laser surface alloys) have been investigated by Vickers microindentation method, whereby a hard diamond indenter is pressed into the solid specimen surface. With this method, residual diagonals of indenter impression are measured as a function of load. This approach enables determining not only of heardness but also of elastic modulus and yielding stress of the specimen surface. These devices have a very high sensitivity, which allow an investigation of the mechanical properties of surface layers as small as several micrometers thick. This method was applied to estimate the elastic modulus and yielding stress of laser coatings and laser surface alloys with thickness of 0,1 mm to 1,0 mm.
