  • Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that causes damage to the alveolar bone and the major cause of tooth loss. Simvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering drug, has been shown to help the process of new bone formation. One of the important indicator of bone regeneration is the formation of osteoblasts. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of topical application of simvastatin on the number of osteoblasts in alveolar bone formation after ligature-induced periodontitis in rats. Twenty-four Sprague dawley rats, male, aged 2.5-3 months, weighed 180- 220 grams, were divided into two groups. The treatment group was topically applied simvastatin gel after ligation induced periodontitis for seven days while control group applied CMC-Na 1%. Three subject from each group were sacrificed after 3, 5, 7, and 14 days. The augmented part and surrounding tissues were cut, decalcified, and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin staining. The results showed the mean number of osteoblasts in simvastatin treatment group was higher (55.58 ± 25.25) compared to the control group (35.41 ± 18.26). However, the results of the ANOVA test showed no significant differences between groups (p> 0.05). Based on these results it can be concluded that there was no significant difference in the number of osteoblast between simvastatin treatment group and control group.
