- This research aimed at understanding and describing a literacy environment at home in preschool children. Informants in this research had characteristics as follows: a) Mothers having preschool child/children of 3-5 years old b) Having domicile in Karangasem, Gonilan, Mendungan, and Nilasari, Sukoharjo. The method used in this research was an open-ended questionnaire. The results of this research showed that the literacy environment at home in preschool children consisted of parents’ awareness on the importance of children to be taught with a literacy ability since early age, consisting of parents’ habit in conducting literacy activities as daily activities, therefore, these activities were also implemented to the preschool age children, the activities conducted by the parents and the children were conducted together and interactively and supported by materials or equipments that can help the development of literacy ability in the children. Nevertheless, the researcher also found obstables in teaching literacy to children at home. The supporting factors found by the researcher in this research were the parents’ awareness on the importance of early literacy ability in the home environment, the daily activities conducted by the informants, habit of reading together, completeness of literacy materials at home in the forms of story books used by the informant to be read to the children, stationery, toys that support literacy at home, and activities conducted together with the children. The inhibiting factors in teaching literacy at home found by the researcher were: the first was the family’s income in which majority of them had a low income, the limitation of the informants’ reading materials and husband, and the limitation of the supporting literacy materials at home provided by the informants.
